History of New Age Music
New Age emerged as a music style in the late 1960’s and in the early 1970’s. Its emergence and ever-increasing popularity seems to have paralleled that of the New Age movement. The New Age movement occurred as a result of worldwide changes pertaining to people’s spiritualistic understandings in the 1960’s. New Age music is often employed by individuals who are attempting to achieve altered states of consciousness, and this New Age music style is even frequently used in meditation practices.
It wasn’t until 1975, that this mystical and calming style of music was
officially named. A guitarist and owner of Windham Hill Records
publicly designated the numinous style of music as New Age in an effort
to sell his distinctive style of music. The popularity of New Age music
rose in the mid 1980’s, again paralleling the reemergence of the New
Age movement. This style of music is popular world-wide; its appeal can
be attributed to its ability to cross cultural and generational
boundaries. Performers like Enya have also brought the overwhelming
acceptance of New Age music throughout the world to new heights.
