The Human League was first established in the late 70’s in Sheffield and has since remained the trendsetters of electronic pop. A band that draws its inspirations and musings from bands like Kraftwerk, they have developed their own unique style; a style that has remained timeless and has endured the harshness of the music industry.
The Human League played on the Escenario stage at the Benicassim Festival on Saturday, July 21, 2007. Despite the fact that the band members have changed with the passage of time, the one thing that remains consistent is their sound. Philip Oakey has offered up his vocal talent since the band’s inception, and both Susan Ann Gayle and Joanne Catherall have been delivering their vocal talents for the band since the 1980’s. The band’s legendary electronic sound and vocals remains consistent, even after they were joined by Neil Sutton in 1990 (keyboardist), Nic Burke in 2001 (instrumentalist), Rob Barton in 2001 (percussionist), and David Beevers took over onstage engineering in the 90’s. The band’s recent Dare Tour actually marked the thirtieth year anniversary for the band’s recognition in the music industry. For the die-hard fans of the Human League, the Benicassim Festival did not disappoint. They performed the ever-famous “Don’t You Want Me Baby,” from their album Dare: a song that proved to be their most popular single ever in 1981. The band continued to stir up eighties nostalgia and added a sense of musical sophistication to the Escenario set. Lead singer, Phil Oakey, donned a suit and tie, and the other members of the group, Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Gayle were equally well dressed. Along with Don’t You Want Me Baby, the band performed songs that included Mirrorman, Love Action, The Lebanon, and Human, inciting the audience into dance. |
