Metro Riots @ Proud Gallery, 5.5.07

After touring for two months with Juliette & The Licks through Europe, the Metro Riots are back home in London, with a new video, single and album in tow. They couldn't have chosen a better location for their homecoming gig than Proud this weekend. After a the long awaited re-opening of their sun terrace last thursday, Proud has been turned into a fairy tale land. Following the theme of Alice in Wonderland, Proud is now sporting huge cupcakes that hang from the ceiling, fairy lights and flowers everywhere, and the characters from Carol's story have been painted on the brick walls of the Gin Factory. And if this wasn't enough, that evening at the highly popular Be@Proud night, they even had people dressed up as Alice, The Mad Hatter and the Rabbit mingling with the fashionable Indie crowd.

But before Metro Riots could return to the London stage, Band(ism) was opening the live program that night. Fitting the surreal scenery like no one else with their white suits and white Venetian carnival masks, the Manchester based band launched into their set of pop-punk-folk. But unfortunately image isn't everything and although influences by The Cure and The Buzzcocks are obvious, it becomes clear very quickly that this is not the most innovative band you will see this year.

After short break, during which entertainment is provided by the Mystery Jets behind the turntables (under their pseudonym KERBLAM!) it was finally time for the Metro Riots to take the stage. And their London fans certainly missed them if the deafening applause was anything to go by. Starting their set with "Poison the Bride", a crowd pleaser, front man Damo announced how glad they are to be back in London. After this the set was dominated by new tracks from their album like "Baby You've Become Another habit". But also old favourites like "Butcher of Hollywood" made the crowd dance wildly. With their mixture of rock and delta blues (and the slightest hint of 70s metal) the Riots are certainly not your every day Indie band. With already having a respectable following in London and all over the country, the release of their debut album "Night Time Angel Candy" (out on the 28th May), might be their final breakthrough. The new single "New Epidemic" (released on Bank holiday), just like their first single "When You're Gone", was made single of the week by The Sun, and this is also the song the boys closed their set with. The way things are looking, this could be their year.
