Mau Mau

Italy’s Mau Mau are certainly an intriguing proposition. The phrase world music can be terrifying, it immediately conjures up images of self satisfied middle aged musicians strumming happily along whilst a choir of children hum along rhythmically in the background. Thankfully Mau Mau manage to avoid this danger, although much of their music is rooted within their Italian folk background, they are not afraid to take influences from across the globe. Clapping hands, stomping feet elements of Arabian and African pop music are all used to give Mau Mau’s music a unique feel.

Mau Mau’s name has a rich heritage,  it was used to define the poor from the south of Italy, and was a term given to a Kenyan liberation group who fought against the British. Given their name you can assume that Mau Mau’s music is not casual and meaningless, and whilst it certainly is raw and emotional it is also immediate and being so up tempo it is very danceable. Mau Mau again illustrate that if you look a little further afield you can find something a bit unusual but still well worth a listen.
