Gus Gus – Forever

“It has taken a handful of time to create Forever because Gus Gus is not God.”

That’s the first line of the press release concerning Gus Gus’s 5th studio album and indeed, five years have passed since Attention had been released in 2002.

The Icelandic band, who formed while filming a short film in 1995 (band member Earth joined later in 2000) have since then switched the label, Forever was released on Pineapple Records (Gung Ho in the UK) in January 2007, but stayed true to their Electronica based sounds.

Forever shows their full range of their electronic repertoire with more mainstream accessible songs like “You’ll Never Change”, which has some early 90s Eurodance elements that might remind one of SNAP!, but also typical instrumental Rave tracks like “Degeneration”. In some tracks, like “Need In Me”, Earth’s vocals are so powerful and prominent that one could almost forget the beats completely, an occurrence that is quite unusual for this genre.

If party tracks are not your thing, don’t worry, Gus Gus are not finished yet. “Sweet Smoke”, besides the title track “Forever”, one of the highlights of the album, “Moss” and “Mallflowers” provide you with excellent chill-out House tunes that could be played in the highly fashionable bar lounge of your choice. But if you like it a bit darker, “Lust” and “If You Don’t Jump (You’re English)” will be your favourites.

On Forever there seems to be something for every type of fan of electronic music, and if you don’t prefer one over the other, then you can be sure that this album will not bore you anytime soon.
